Conrad Murray Will Voluntarily Surrender

Posted in: 6th February 2010

Dr. Conrad Murray will walk into court on his own free will Monday and face the judge after being charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson … law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

Our sources say counsel for Murray spoke by phone with members of the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office this morning and the D.A. agreed Dr. Murray could surrender without being arrested.

Unless the LAPD intervenes on its own and hooks Dr. Murray up, we’re told he’ll show up in court with a bail bondsman on Monday. We’re also told the recommended bail will be $25,000, which will be posted on the spot.

Sources also tell TMZ the arraignment will take place at 1:30 PM on Monday.

The judge will order Dr. Murray to go to an LAPD station for booking. It’s unclear how long Murray will have to appear at the station.

We Are the World Sequel Set to Aid Haiti

Posted in: 24th January 2010

According to Roger Friedman,  Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie are planning a massive 25th anniversary re-recording of “We Are the World.”

The timing couldn’t be better, sadly enough.

The duo is summoning lots and lots of talent from Grammy weekend to stay an extra night — Monday Feb. 1 — and come to the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. There, they will celebrate a quarter century since Ken Kragen, Richie and Michael Jackson organized the original “We Are the World” with Quincy.

This time the artists invited include Usher, Natalie Cole, and John Legend. But you can bet that more names will be added shortly and that all the Grammy nominees and participants will be asked to come as well. Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich will produce the event, which will then be turned into a video and single just like it was in 1985. Don’t be surprised if Wyclef Jean joins in, along with Sting, Fergie, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake and other distinctive voices.

It’s hoped that as in 1985, everyone will

“leave their egos at the door.”

Originally, this anniversary celebration was to be held on Jan. 28. But when the Haiti earthquake happened, sources tell me, the whole deal changed. Now proceeds will go to Haiti relief. In 1985, “We Are the World,” which begat Live Aid, raised money for Africa relief.

Plans are still sketchy, but one thing’s for sure: In some way, the song’s co-author Michael Jackson will be invoked. AEG is co-producing this event. They’re also putting together a 3D tribute to Michael for the Grammy show from elements Jackson was going to use for his tour. Jackson recorded “We Are the World” for what became “This Is It.” Surely he’ll be included here as well, which will make the whole project even more poignant.

Stay tuned. PS: Quincy Jones is about to release what has been described to me as a landmark new album that he’s made with contemporary R&B and hip hop artists. He was responsible for the original “We Are the World” and will guide the new one. He is not a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in case you were wondering.

Jackson Brothers Staying Out Of Blame Game

Posted in: 10th December 2009

Jackie, Marlon and Tito Jackson say they don’t want to point fingers about their brother Michael’s death.

Jackie Jackson cites the ongoing Los Angeles police homicide investigation, saying he wants to wait until it’s finished before commenting.

Tito Jackson also says its premature to say who did what because all the facts haven’t been gathered.

The brothers made the comments while promoting their new reality series on A&E Network, “The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty,” which premieres Dec. 13.

Authorities have said their homicide investigation was focusing on Michael Jackson’s personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray, but no charges have been filed.

Through a spokeswoman, Murray maintains that he didn’t prescribe or administer anything to Jackson that should have killed him.

MJ Mosaic Breaks Guinness World Record

Posted in: 14th November 2009

A mosaic of the late Michael Jackson composed of 230,000 paintbrushes by Albanian artist Saimir Strati entered the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest paintbrush mosaic on Friday.

Almost as big the side of the truck on which it stood, the mosaic of brown and black paintbrushes showed Michael Jackson singing with his head slightly thrown backwards and his arms outstretched.

“I have measured the mosaic and this is a new Guinness World Record,”

Guinness adjudicator Andrea Banfi told the crowd, who cheered loudly in Tirana’s main Skanderbeg square.

“Saimir is an old member of the Guinness World Record family and we are glad to have him back,”

says Banfi.

Strati worked for 16 hours each day for a month listening to Jackson’s music at high volume and showed his work around Albanian towns before taking it to the centre of Tirana.

“All the time I was being guided by his music and made a silent deal with him to help me find the secrets of his great singing,”

he says.

Jackson’s mosaic was the fourth work to earn Strati a Guinness World Record’s entry.

He has also created the world’s largest mosaic with nails, toothpicks and bottle corks.

This Is It Tops $200 Million Worldwide

Posted in: 12th November 2009

Michael Jackson’s concert movie “This Is It” has taken more than $200 million at box offices worldwide in the first two weeks of release, the studio behind the movie said on Thursday.

Sony Pictures Entertainment said the movie had grossed $61 million in North America and more than $140 million internationally. Japan ($27.2 million) and the UK ($14.3 million) were particularly strong markets.

The movie is now the 22nd biggest grossing movie worldwide of 2009, according to industry tracker boxofficemojo.com

“This Is It”, distributed by Sony Corp-owned Columbia Pictures, was compiled from footage of Jackson rehearsing for a series of planned comeback concerts before his sudden death in June.

Sony paid concert promoters AEG and Jackson’s estate about $60 million for the right to make and distribute the movie.

The $200 million plus gross is almost three times more than 2008’s “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” — a movie some box office watchers had used as a benchmark for “This Is It.”

The Jackson film opened on October 28 for a planned two week run but has since been extended until early December.

This Is It DVD – Not Released Until February

Posted in: 29th October 2009

Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” opens worldwide in theaters on October 28th. But according to Roger Friedman, you won’t be seeing in on DVD until February 2010.

That’s because the movie studios have a deal with DVD companies. There has to be a 90-day window after the movie has played in theaters before it’s available in stores.

“This Is It” is set to play for two weeks, from October 28th through November 13th. Sony won’t admit it, but if it does well, the documentary could get a one or two week extension in theaters.

Either way, count 90 days from the end of its theater run before you can buy it as a DVD. That means no Michael Jackson Christmas. The earliest it would turn up is February 13, 2010.

That nugget of info should create even more demand for tickets to the theater run. Even this reporter assumed “This Is It” would be the stocking stuffer of all time. But sources inside say no, and that’s it. Fans will have to rely on the collector’s item soundtrack CD featuring the songs from the movie in their original recorded versions.

Marlon Jackson: Kids Not In Reality Show

Posted in: 19th October 2009

Marlon Jackson has dismissed the rumors that his brother’s children will appear in the family’s upcoming reality series, insisting that he is appalled by the very suggestion.

Rumors have been flying all over the internet that Prince, Paris and Blanket were being considered for ‘The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty,’ which the family started shooting before Michael’s death earlier this year. Producers of the show, which will air on A&E, failed to confirm or deny the news and Jackson family matriarch, Katherine, insisted her grandchildren would not appear on a reality show in her lifetime.

Now, Marlon Jackson, Michael’s older brother, has come forward to dismiss the report once and for all. He says,

The family is appalled about the stories that the kids are being put in the reality show. The family would never put them in a compromising situation. They respect their privacy too much.”
