Thriller 25th Anniversary Fan Event in New York City

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

On Saturday February 9, over 200 Michael Jackson fans gathered at the Sage Theater in Times Square, the heart of New York City to celebrate the release of Thriller 25. Michael posters covered the walls, memorabilia on display, as the new album played and fans discussed their MJ memories.

The event was organized by performer Pete Carter, 23 years old, from Toms River, New Jersey. A fan since the age of seven, Pete called dozens of performers and crew members together to make this event possible.

“You took my breath away. The entire night was amazing. Your show was so well organised and it was such a nice sized intimate setting that made everything so much more enjoyable and interactive.” said Vernay Lewis of MJFC (USA).

Valerie Tobias of Club Michael Jackson said “I must say it was a spectacular evening filled with magic. When the doors opened, we walked into an MJ world! There were lights, posters all over the walls, and people all around waiting to greet each other. The music was blasting, I was in the front row singing along and moving my arms as each performer performed.”

Longtime fan from Brooklyn, Reva Thomas said “I loved the show, and ambience of the venue. The show had a unique, eclectic, neo-soul twist flavour, and I truly enjoyed the interactive features.”

She was referring to the Ultimate Fan Contest, which challenged fans to name the title of a MJ song by listening to a small second long clip. Eliminated one by one, the winner left standing was Beverly Brown from Philadelphia, PA. Beverly took home the deluxe edition of Thriller 25, The Visionary Box Set and The Ultimate Collection Box Set…all provided by SonyBMG.

HOSTED BY: Stepp Stewart of “The Stepp Stewart Show” and Michael Walton, track star, and motivational speaker who is currently training for the 2008 Olympics.

PERFORMERS: Odysy, Jon O’Shaunessey, Anthony D’Amato, Courtney Cooper, Nhojj, Jermaine Forrester, Nitty, Petrel, edibleRed, Ryan James, and Pete Carter.

$30 Million Offer to Play London

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Roger Friedman

Michael Jackson had better wake up and smell the coffee. He’s got a real, solid, $1 million-a-night offer on the table to play London’s Millennium Dome.

AEG Live, as I told you a few weeks ago, wants Jackson to play its Millennium Dome in London. Sources tell me they’ve made him an extraordinary offer.

The deal that’s been offered could total up to $30 million. It begins with a $10 million guarantee for 10 nights, with a maximum of 30 nights adding up to $30 million.

The first grouping is all he has to do, though, just those 10 shows. With bump-ups, etc., he could gross around $17 million.

It’s not a hard show to do, either. The proposal, as I’ve been told, is for Jackson to stage his bestselling album “Thriller” from beginning to end at each show. Then, for encores, he would add in several hits from “Off the Wall” and other albums.

The catch: These shows must be completed by the end of 2008, to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the album. The promoters originally thought it could happen this spring, but they’ve revised their plans to the fall.

“Thriller 25″ — with tracks remixed by Akon, will.i.am and others — was released Tuesday and is said to be selling very well. Hitsdailydouble.com predicts the package could sell between 90,000 and 120,000 copies.

Not bad for a 25-year-old recording.

This whole deal for Jackson to perform at the Millennium Dome is tricky. I’m told the AEG people really wanted Jackson to make some kind of appearance at the Grammys on Sunday to drum up excitement.

The AEG offer should pique Michael’s interest for other reasons, too. If he can complete the 30-concert run, he’d beat Prince’s record of 21 shows. And, sources say, Prince didn’t clear the $1 million-a-night take. Why?

“He charged 31.21 British sterling per show. He got the number from the album that was out at the time, called “3121.” And that was taken from his address. And the numbers added up to seven, which he also liked.”

Luckily, Michael Jackson has no address at this time, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Thriller 25 Party Report from New York

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Our NY corrspondent Vernay C. Lewis sent us a report about the ‘Thriller 25th Anniversary Fan Party’ which took place at the Sage Theater in New York City (USA).

My friend Pete Carter had this brilliant idea to book the Sage Theater in New York City so that the fans could come together and celebrate the release of the 25th Anniversary Thriller Cd.

The event was this past Saturday, February 9, 2008. The meet and greet/dance portionwas from 6-8pm and the performances began around 8:15 or so. It was really nice and mellow. The entire lounge was decorated in MJ style decor and many of the performers were mingling about with the guests. It was a great opportunity to catch up with old MJ friends and meet new ones.

The Sage Theater was perfect for this type of party. It was a smaller more intimate venue which made it very personable. All of the performers were amazing and did an awesome job. Although they are all new upcoming artists of their own right, they sang their own renditions of our favorite MJ songs! What a treat….Odysy (yes, that’s how they spell it) opened the show with, “Wanna Be Startin’ Something”….and the fun just kept going from their. Anthony D’Amato performed the most soulful rendition of “PYT” I’ve ever heard. And their were countless others that blew us away. Make no mistake though, the highlight of the show for us Michael fans was Pete Carter’s impersonation of Michael Jackson. His performances were captivating! The costumes were amazing, the dancing was incredible, and the “THRILLER” finale was so scary! We sat in the front row, but by the time “THRILLER” ended, we were in the second row - SCARED! Too funny!

There was a compitition titled,”Michael Jackson Ultimate Fan Contest…It started out as seven of us, who had been chosen ahead of time to participate in the game. Um, no, I didn’t win, but my beautiful friend Beverly did and that’s acceptable! I’ll get her next time though. All we had to do is listen to song clips and write the names down. The songs were supposed to get more rare and more difficult as we went on. I lost on “GIRLFRIEND” a MJ song from the “Off the Wall” album that I know like the back of my hand. I still can’t believe I couldn’t recognize that! The runner-ups both received an advanced copy of the 25th Anniversary Thriller Album. Beverly, as the grand prize winner, also won an Annivesary Thriller cd, as well as the Visionary Box Set, The Ultimate Collection, and a rare MJ book. All the prizes were provided by Sony! : )

This was a great opportunity for us local East Coast fans to come together as we anticipated Michael’s newest release. And speaking of anticipation….we had a horrible snow and ice storm yesterday here in my hometown. But just like the postman, nor rain, sleet, or snow kept me from getting to the store to get my 25th Anniversary and Anniversary Deluxe cd’s….and I’m lovin’ them!!!!!!

Thriller 25 Album Launch UK Report

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Our UK correspondent Janice sent us the following report from the launch of ‘Thriller 25th Anniversary Edition’ in London (UK):

The morning of Monday 11th February was a beautiful dry sunny morning, and as if that wasn’t enough… more importantly it was the launch day of the Thriller 25th Anniversary album in the UK.

My friend and I took the tube to Oxford Street and made our way to the HMV store, arriving at 10.15am , where we met up with some fans outside.

It was around 11am before anything really happened, when suddenly some of the fans started running up Oxford Street to the right of the store, clicking their cameras as they went.

It wasn’t long before we saw what all the fuss was about.

Coming down a very crowded Oxford street were around 10 fans all of them adorned in Thriller jackets, fronted by a Michael fan in a silver sparkling Dangerous jacket. They posed for pictures out side the store in front of two large poster boards that had been put out at the front of the store especially.

After a photo shoot, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Beat It’ were played much to the delight of the crowd, which by then had tripled in size.
It was very hard for us to see what was going on at the front, as the place got so crowded and somehow we ended up at the back of it all. But we did see Danny Oliver, Remy and the dancers from ‘Thriller Live’. Then all of a sudden just above the crowds we saw Navi out front dancing……. We hadn’t even realised that Navi was there up until that point, as the crowd was so huge.

Cameras were flashing everywhere and for a twenty five or so magical minutes, a part of bustling Oxford Street finally came to a stand still and was held spellbound by all things MJ.

After the dancing, we all made our way into the store; to pick up our copies of the Thriller 25th anniversary album in various forms… although some fans couldn’t wait that long and had got there earlier to grab theirs before the launch had started.

Navi had several pictures taken with fans inside the store, which was buzzing as they showed concert footage of Michael on a huge screen at the back.

Fans started to disperse gradually after a good half hour or more, and we left the store in pure wonderment of knowing the King of Pop was back stronger than ever before……….. Although, we know that he had never, ever been away.
