Could This Is It Win An Oscar?

Posted in: 29th October 2009

“Michael Jackson’s This Is It” comes too late in the year to be considered for a documentary Oscar, but the film about the late King of Pop’s preparations for a series of comeback concerts could qualify for other Hollywood honors, including the Academy Award for best picture.

The film, which opened around the globe Tuesday and Wednesday has already earned rousing praise from fans and critics, who say it restores Jackson’s reputation as a world-class entertainer.

Director Kenny Ortega, a longtime Jackson collaborator who was overseeing his London concert comeback, crafted the nearly two-hour film from more than 100 hours of footage recorded during rehearsals for the London shows, which were to have begun in July. Jackson died June 25 at age 50.

“What we did here was focus on telling a good story and creating a film for the fans really enabling them to understand what Michael Jackson had dreamed for them,”

Ortega said Wednesday.

He added it was his hope

“the audience for this film will grow and that as many people come to see it as possible because I think that it’s a wonderful story about a brilliant man… Awards, Oscars, that’s all great wishful thinking.”

It may be more than wishful, said Steven Gaydos, executive editor of the Hollywood trade paper Variety and a self-described cynic. With the Academy Awards best-picture slate expanded to 10 films this year rather than the traditional five, “This Is It” could find itself among the contenders, he said.

To qualify, the film must complete a seven-day run in Los Angeles County and filmmakers would need to

“submit the proper paperwork,”

said Leslie Unger, spokeswoman for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which puts on the Oscars. The movie could also be considered in other categories such as sound, she said.

Sony, which paid $60 million for the global film rights, plans to keep “This Is It” in theaters for just over two weeks. The studio did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment about whether it planned to submit the film in any of the Oscar categories.

The film took in $2.2 million domestically from its first late-night screenings, setting it up for a strong shot at a No. 1 debut weekend. It is already well on its way to becoming a top-grossing music documentary.

Ortega, a veteran director, producer and choreographer who counts TV’s “High School Musical” among his credits, could find himself in contention for a best-director nod, Gaydos said.

“He did a masterful job putting this whole thing together,”

he said.

“It was so powerful and interesting, so creative and well-done, I think he should be considered… Kenny just won over all these critics like me with Michael Jackson that anything interesting could go on with this guy.”

After completing a weeklong run, “This Is It” could also be eligible for Golden Globe awards consideration if it’s submitted before the Nov. 6 deadline, said Michael Russell, a spokesman for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the annual ceremony.

Ortega said an Oscar nod would be a fitting recognition of Jackson’s last work.

“He deserves one,”

he said.

“Come on people.”

A New Interview With Kenny Ortega

Posted in: 29th October 2009

By now, most anybody who has read of the upcoming Michael Jackson movie, “This Is It” which debuts globally October 28, knows it was directed by Jackson’s friend and dance choreographer Kenny Ortega.

Ortega had been hired to stage the King of Pop’s London concerts, also called “This Is It,” which would have begun last July had the “Thriller” singer remained alive. Jackson died, of course, on June 25 from a lethal combination of drugs.

After Jackson’s death, Ortega was hired to edit together 80 hours of video taken on stage and behind the scenes of the “This Is It” rehearsals for the 111-minute movie. Many of the recent interviews with Ortega have been about Jackson’s sudden death and the events around it, so Reuters took a minute to talk about the movie and what fans will actually see.

Q: How about for a change of pace, we focus on the movie:

A: (laughs). Thank you.

Q: It has been called part documentary, part concert film, but what does that mean? What’s the “It” in “This Is It”

A: It’s such a unique idea. I call it a “musical mosaic.” We took the remnants of what we had and constructed a musical story that I think will help fans appreciate what Michael was putting into “This Is It”, what his dreams for it were, what his goals were for it.”

Q: Does it have a plot or themes? What happens onscreen?

A: It doesn’t have a plot line. There is not a narrative, however there is definitely a story. It is a story of a master of his craft, a great genius in his final theatrical work and creative process. You see him interacting. It’s a privileged path to observe Michael as the creative architect and mastermind behind his work. And this is something that I don’t think people knew he did, let alone ever seen him do.

Q: So, we get a picture of Michael as a creative force.

A: Yeah, as the conductor.

Q: Not only in music and dance, but also in his own words as he’s talking about the show and his reasons for including different songs or staging different dances?

A: That’s right, and in other people’s words, too … Nowhere near the 80 hours did we have Michael in rehearsal. However, we had enough to be able to cut together a pretty big portion of what Michael was planning for the tour. The film is somewhat wall-to-wall music. The band, the singers, Michael live. You see it, you really feel it, you sense it. It’s raw, unguarded, it’s a unique behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of putting a show together.

Q: When you were sitting in that dark, editing room looking at the video, were there times where you said to yourself, “I have to show that. That is pure Michael”? And what were they.

A: Absolutely. First of all, when I assumed this and took on the responsibility to direct this … I realized it was my responsibility, the journey wasn’t over, and then I called upon Michael immediately, and I was just like, “you’re not letting me go in there alone.” And everyday, I really did bring Michael with me as best I could. And never forgot he was there. He was in my mind and in my heart, Michael, along with some of the other creative friends that worked with us on the concert.

We started to look at the footage and we had two things in mind: most importantly Michael’s integrity and secondly, what is going to serve the fan base. And the footage talked to us. It jumped out at us. There were times, I swear, when we heard Michael say “Use it all; do it all.” And I’d look at (my collaborator) and say, “did you just say that?” And he’d say, Michael said, “Do it all.” And I’d say, “that’s what I thought. I thought I heard Michael say “do it all.”

Q: The opposite question is, were there parts of Michael you didn’t want to show?

A: It’s unguarded, and it’s raw, and it’s real and it’s truthful, and it’s not always pretty and he’s not always lit, you know. We weren’t really overly protective. It has soul and heart and truth and warmth and magic. The real answer to that question would be “no.”

Q: For all that has been said and written about Michael, what don’t people know that comes through in the movie?

A: That he did it all. He did it all. He wrote the music. He understood the music. He knew every part that everybody was supposed to play. He could sing you the bass line or the guitar part. He could play the horn line or the string line. He knew the harmonies, he sang them all.

I think what we walk away with, for those that might have forgotten … I think this will remind people, I hope it will remind people, of this incredible talent that existed, you know, and the tremendous legacy he left for us.

This Is It DVD – Not Released Until February

Posted in: 29th October 2009

Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” opens worldwide in theaters on October 28th. But according to Roger Friedman, you won’t be seeing in on DVD until February 2010.

That’s because the movie studios have a deal with DVD companies. There has to be a 90-day window after the movie has played in theaters before it’s available in stores.

“This Is It” is set to play for two weeks, from October 28th through November 13th. Sony won’t admit it, but if it does well, the documentary could get a one or two week extension in theaters.

Either way, count 90 days from the end of its theater run before you can buy it as a DVD. That means no Michael Jackson Christmas. The earliest it would turn up is February 13, 2010.

That nugget of info should create even more demand for tickets to the theater run. Even this reporter assumed “This Is It” would be the stocking stuffer of all time. But sources inside say no, and that’s it. Fans will have to rely on the collector’s item soundtrack CD featuring the songs from the movie in their original recorded versions.

Jacksons Need Outfits for the Big Premiere

Posted in: 28th October 2009

Tonight’s the big “This Is It” premiere and the Jackson brothers haven’t got a thing to wear.

TMZ obtained a copy of an email sent yesterday from a staffer working on the Jacksons’ upcoming A&E reality show to different fashion companies asking them to please outfit Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and Tito in “dressy attire” for tonight’s premiere.

The letter states that the staffer would,

“love to put the four brothers in XXXXX or dressy attire as this premiere will be receiving a lot of press and will be featured on the reality show.”

No word if the Jackson bros scored a deal with anyone — but we can’t wait to see their costumes.

Liz Taylor saw an advanced screening of the Michael Jackson docu-film “This Is It” last night — and to say she liked it could be the biggest understatement of all time.

Liz continued,

This Is It Producers: No MJ Body Doubles

Posted in: 28th October 2009

The people behind “This Is It” are furious over reports that the Michael Jackson featured in the movie is a body double — claiming those reports are

“pure garbage.”

The controversy began earlier this month after Joe Jackson claimed the media was going to

“tear this movie apart”

– and insisted it was

“mostly body doubles.”

But a rep from Sony — co-producers of the flick — tells TMZ, “This story is pure garbage and there are no body doubles.

Audiences will begin to see the film tomorrow and every time they see The King of Pop they will know that every frame is unquestionably Michael as he rehearses and prepares for the London concerts that were to have begun this past summer.

Jackson Family Member: Movie Is Riveting

Posted in: 28th October 2009

Finally a member of the Jackson family is speaking out about the Michael Jackson movie “This Is It” — up to now the family has either been silent or negative about the flick.

But Jackie Jackson — who saw the movie on Thursday night — liked it a lot, telling TMZ:

My brother’s movie ‘This Is It’ is truly riveting. Michael is electrifying! We get a glimpse of a true genius at work. His passionate message for healing the world, saving the planet and our children’s futures is something he was always striving for in his lifetime.”

So far Katherine Jackson is unmoved — we hear she will not see the movie.

Jackson Family Finally Scores This Is It Tix

Posted in: 28th October 2009

Michael Jackson‘s family has just gotten a cache of tickets to “This Is It” — but not everyone is going.

We’ve learned Sony reps gave 60 tickets to Katherine Jackson‘s assistant last night at a special screening for the movie. We’re also told Jackie Jackson, along with some of Michael’s nieces and nephews, also attended and enjoyed it.

No word on why it took so long for the Jackson’s to get the tickets, because Sony had been saying for more than a week they had already been delivered.

We’re told Katherine and La Toya have both said they’re not going to see the movie. We’re told Michael’s 3 kids want to see it.

La Toya – Mom & I Wont Watch MJ Movie

Posted in: 28th October 2009

Tickets are going fast for the limited engagement of the MJ concert doc “This Is It” — but there are two people who aren’t scrambling to get seats: Michael‘s own mother and sister.

We got La Toya Jackson outside of Katsuya last night where she told us,

“We’re not seeing it, my mother, we’re not seeing it.”

As TMZ previously reported, 60 tickets were offered to the family, but Katherine insists no one ever called her about getting seats. We’re also told Michael’s three kids really want to see the flick.
