Billboard: King of Pop Still Rocks Record Sales

Posted in: 28th June 2011

A little thing like death can’t stop the King of Pop’s record sales. According to Billboard, the music sold since Jackson’s death accounts for 33 percent of all the cumulative sales of his catalog in the Soundscan era (since 1991).

Through the week ending June 19, 2011, Jackson has moved 32.3 million albums total. Since his passing, the singer has sold 10.6 million units.

The biggest-selling albums since his death are “Number Ones,” which moved 2.74 million since June 2009. Followed by Jackson’s 2009 “This Is It” soundtrack album to the hit movie with 1.67 million. Then there is “Thriller” (1.49), “The Essential Michael Jackson” (1.38) and “Bad” (550,000).

As for single tracks, Jackson sold 16.3 million copies since 2009. Led by “Billie Jean” with 1.26 million, the top five bestsellers are “Man in the Mirror” (1.23), “Beat It” (1.11), “Thriller” (1.04) and “Smooth Criminal” (872,000).

According to Billboard, the bulk of those sales came in the six months following his death (11 million tracks; 8 million albums). In 2010, he sold 3.7 million tracks and 2.1 million albums. It is estimated that he will sell 3 million tracks and 1 million more albums by the end of 2011.

Biggest Act of the Digital Age? …Michael Jackson of course!

Posted in: 4th April 2011

Michael Jackson has been named the most popular act of the digital age.

Information collected from Gracenote, which compiles its data from billions of searches on services such as iTunes, Google lyrics and through Sony products, has indicated that Michael Jackson is the most looked-up, reports Music Week.

Other artists who follow Jackson on the list include Bob Marley and Tupac Shakur.

Gracenote added that The Beatles rank highly in Europe and North America, but do not appear in the uppermost parts of the data in other territories.

Chart Update

Posted in: 31st January 2011

The Sony/MJ Estate album ‘Michael’ dropped #38 places to #95 on the UK Album chart this week.

Also, in australia the ‘Michael’ album has vanished completely from the ARIA Album chart Top 50!

“MICHAEL” – Week 4

Posted in: 14th January 2011

The Sony Music/MJ Estate album ‘Michael’ (which Michael Jackson himself did not put together or produce) is about to begin what I am going to call the “plummet from the summit”. The reason behind it is mainly the album’s content. The album is packed with songs we have already heard, some songs recorded 30 years ago, and three tracks which 50% of the MJ fan base (including Musicgoss.com) don’t even believe include MJ’s vocals. There are one or two highlights including “Best Of Joy”, which Michael recorded in 2009, but besides that it’s a very forgettable and embarrassing edition to the legacy of music’s greatest ever contributor.

The plummet is already in full effect in most English speaking countries such as USA, UK and Australia, where the album is no longer in ANY of their Top 20 Album Chart markets (it’s even fallen straight off the UK Top 40 charts altogether after only 3 weeks!)

But the fall is only just starting to happen on the Global charts now. Week by week the sales are reducing, steadily but by large margins. Just a month ago it debuted at #1 with 734,000 sales on the Global Albums chart, but this week (only 3 weeks later) the album has racked up only 93,000 sales around the world bringing it’s overall total to 1.5 million.

The album was predicted to be a blockbuster, and made an initial shipment of approximately 3 million units worldwide! That now seems like a major over-estimation and the odds of all 3 million units moving from store shelves to people’s homes is “slim to none” with the more likely of the two options being “none”.

There is talk of more singles being released from this album, but as an MJ fan I am looking to the future. I am looking to forget this mess of an album as quickly as possible and hope that the Estate and Sony feel the same way. In my opinion they need to hit the abort button, and fast!

Posted in: 15th December 2010

If you happened to look at the official iTunes album chart yesterday morning, you would have seen Michael’s new album in a rather dull position of 95. By that afternoon it was at number 5, jumping a phenomenal 90 positions!

A number 1 spot is now looking likely, as the album currently sits at a comfortable number 2 spot. Watch out R Kelly, The King of Pop is coming up from behind in explosive fashion.
