Will.i.am On Working With Michael Jackson: “We’re Taking It Day By Day”

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

As you’re reading this, Black Eyed Pea and producer to the stars Will.i.am is locked away in a New York City recording studio working with Michael Jackson on the Gloved One’s highly anticipated comeback album. Last week, we reported that Jackson is in town plotting his return, and now as Will.i.am’s solo album Songs About Girls is about to hit record stores, Will tells us, “We’re taking it day by day, we’ve finished some songs. I like what I’m doing, I’m really happy with it, but it’s not my project to talk about. I could be talking about song titles what they sound like and be excited about it, but those songs I made may not make his record and then I look like an idiot.” Fair enough. So what was it like stepping into the studio with a true legend? “That was the hardest thing on the planet Earth that I ever had to endure,” he said. “I even said, ‘You know what, Mike? I know how to work with Justin. I know how to work with Fergie. I know how to work with John Legend. I know how to work with thee people, but it probably took four or five days [for me to figure it out with you].’ He’s like, ‘Why? What do you mean,’” Will recalls, doing a disturbingly spot-on imitation of Jackson’s falsetto whisper. “’Well everything you do I like.’”

“Because we had that conversation, I could navigate the session and not just be like, ‘Ooooh, damn, it’s Michael, oh my God,’” Will remembers. “You can’t let that affect you in the studio when you’re working with newcoming artists,” he adds of working with established greats. “Newcoming artists can have a great idea but because you just worked with Michael Jackson you’re going to think their idea is not superior. You can’t do that. You have to be able to tame a lion and then forget all about it when you’re chillin’ with cats.”

Marcel Marceau Passes Away

Monday, September 24th, 2007

The famous French master of mime, Marcel Marceau, passed away in Paris at the age of 84. Former assistant Emmannuel Vacca told French radio that the performer died on Saturday, but gave no details.

Marceau was inspirational to performers and artists around the world, including Michael Jackson. It has been said that the moonwalk was based on a performance piece titled “Walking Against The Wind” by Marcel Marceau. Both performers found shared inspiration from silent film star Charlie Chaplin.

Offstage, he was famously chatty. “Never get a mime talking. He won’t stop,” he once said.

Marcel Marceau revived a form of art that had its beginnings in ancient Greece. His famous character, Bip, was developed in 1947. Bip was a direct descendant of a 19th century harlequin. Marceau said that his clownish gestures were partly inspired by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. He likened his character to a modern – day Don Quixote, “alone in a fragile world filled with injustice and beauty.”

Marcel Marceau traveled around the world, performing in Asia, Europe and the United States. He called the United States his “second country,” performing first in 1955 and returning every two years. In September 2005, he traveled to Cuba to perform there.

He took his art to stages across the world, performing in Asia, Europe and the United States, his “second country,” where he first performed in 1955 and returned every two years. He performed for Lyndon Johnson, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.

Tireless, Marceau took his art to Cuba for the first time in September 2005.

Marceau continued to perform as he aged and retained the nimble agility that made him famous. He received the Legion of Honor and countless honorary degrees and was invited to attend the United Nations as a goodwill ambassador for a 2002 conference on aging.

“If you stop at all when you are 70 or 80, you cannot go on,” he told the AP in 2003. “You have to keep working.”

In a statement, President Nicolas Sarkozy said that “France loses one of its most eminent ambassadors. Prime Minister Francois Fillon spoke of Marceau as being “the master” with the rare ability of “being able to communicate with each and everyone beyond the barriers of language.”

Akon: ‘Jackson’s Thinking Is On Another Level’

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Akon’s melodic thuggin’ on the airwaves has helped turn records by superstars like Gwen Stefani into harmonic hits.

Now the singer is moving into the realm of three of music’s most iconic legends: Madonna, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.

“Ooh, don’t even say his name twice,” ‘Kon joked recently in Miami, referring to Jackson. “I’m not supposed to be talking about this!”

Although he wouldn’t disclose the specifics of his collaboration or collaborations with Jackson fearing the cold, swift sting of a slap from the King of Pop’s signature gloved hand (or, at least, legal action), he did let MTV News in on the experience.

“He’s incredible,” ‘Kon testified of M.J. “He’s a genius. Just to be in the same room [with him], I felt everything I wanted to accomplish in life has been achieved. That aura … that’s how incredible that aura is. We about to shake the world up, man. You know how you be with somebody and you can’t even explain [the feeling]? I used to sit and think, ‘How does somebody sell so many records and dominate a whole business genre, to a point [where] nobody can’t be a part of that without associating with you?’ The way he thinks … some artists think regional, some think national, I was thinking international. He thinks planets. It’s on another level.”

Michael Jackson to buy Wicklow Castle

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Michael Jackson has splashed out a staggering €20million on an historic castle and estate property in Ireland. Hot Press understands that the King of Pop has bought Luggala Estate, which has been home to a host of stars during their stay in Ireland - including Mel Gibson and Orlando Bloom.

Apparently Jackson fell in love with the 350 acres estate, situated in Roundwood, County Wicklow after he had rented it out for three months last year during his extended stay in Ireland. At the time, newspaper reports said that Jackson was spending between €20k and €30k a week during his Irish visit.

Last year, Luggala Estate made the news when its owner Garech de Brún — a member of the Guinness brewing family — made a deal with the Irish government which saw them purchasing 1,600 acres of the estate land for some e1.7m to extend the public ownership of the Wicklow Mountains National Park.

It was reported last year that Jackson wanted to move to Ireland “permanently” after falling in love with the country following his visit, which saw him accompanied by his three children. During his stay, he was spotted dining in local restaurants, as well as making trips to the cinema, and a shopping jaunt to the Hughes & Hughes bookstore in Dun Laoighaire.

Jackson had viewed various properties in Ireland, but he told friends that nothing came close to the spectacular Luggala Castle and its surroundings. It is believed that a leading developer negotiated the purchase of the castle for Jackson.

Havens and Hideaways gives a complete description of the property :

“The main bedroom is on the ground floor, as is a sitting room with a huge plasma tv, a drawing room, dining room and kitchen. The library is in the courtyard as is the indoor pool.

“Up one flight of stairs there is a bedroom with a four poster bed and its own bathroom. from the landing a staircase leads to a twin room, also with a bathroom.

“To the left is a double bedroom with two doors - one onto a corridor that leads to the second staircase and a twin bedded shamrock room and a single bedded shamrock room and two bathrooms to serve the three bedrooms.

“At the end of this corridor is the minstrels gallery. From the minstrels’ gallery one can go down to another bedroom with a bathroom, overlooking the courtyard.”
