Jackson Loan’s May Effect R&B Star Sly Stone

Friday, February 17th, 2006

Believe it or not, Michael Jackson’s inability to manage his finances may soon affect Sly Stone.

You saw the late ’60s R&B genius — aka the J.D. Salinger of pop music — make his bizarre return to show biz at the Grammys. He appeared on stage sporting a huge white rooster’s mane of a mohawk, plunked a few notes on a keyboard and then split for locations unknown. It was all in support of a new album of remixed hits called “Different Strokes for Different Folks.”

What you may not know that is all of Sly’s famous songs from the ’60s — “Everyday People,” “I Want To Take You Higher,” “Family Affair,” etc. — are published by Jackson’s MiJac Music. And MiJac is currently the collateral for a $70 million loan that will come due on Feb. 20.

Another $200 million, also due that day, was backed by Jackson’s ownership in Sony/ATV Music Publishing. MiJac, which also holds all of the songs Jackson’s written as an adult, is part of Warner Chappell Music.

Calif. Court Sides With Jackson’s Ex-Wife

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

An appeals court on Wednesday refused to reinstate an order granting Michael
Jackson sole custody of his two children with ex-wife Debbie Rowe.

California’s 2nd District Court of Appeals said that while Rowe signed away
her parental rights in 2001 to the 47-year-old performer’s two oldest
children, Michael Jr. and Paris, it found that the judge in that case did
not properly handle the proceedings.

Rowe, who was married to Jackson from 1997 to 1999 but never lived with the
self-styled King of Pop, persuaded a Los Angeles Superior Court judge to
overturn the child custody agreement in 2004 on legal grounds.

Rowe’s petition cited accusations of child molestation against Jackson and
his association with the Nation of Islam, whose members briefly provided
security for the singer during the trial.

The case ended with Jackson’s acquittal in June of 2005.

After the lower court refused Jackson’s request to overturn that order, he
appealed to the 2nd District, which ruled against the entertainer and held
that the original order terminating Rowe’s parental rights was voided.

Rowe, who was working as a medical assistant for a dermatologist when she
met Jackson, was called as a prosecution witness in his trial but defended
him on the stand, saying that he was kind, selfless and “generous to a
fault.”

Jackson, who has spent much of his time since the trial in Bahrain, has a
third child, Prince Michael II, by an unknown mother.

He was married to Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley, in the
mid-1990s, but the couple had no children together.

Tom Mesereau to give a lecture at UCI center on psychology

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

By GARY ROBBINS

UC Irvine has created a Center for Psychology and Law that will be headed by
Elizabeth Loftus, the renowned expert on false and repressed memories who
has been a scientific analyst or consultant on high-profile legal cases
involving such people as Michael Jackson and Rodney King.

Loftus, who joined UCI in 2002, said the Irvine faculty has “one of the best
concentrations in country of people working at the intersection of the law
and psychology,” making the center practical. Its affiliated professors
include criminalist William Thomson, a DNA expert who was part of O.J.
Simpson’s “dream team” in the 1990s.

The university also is hiring three new professors and recruiting additional
graduate students who study at the center, which is part of UCI’s School of
Social Ecology.

The hiring of Loftus, a psychologist, was considered a coup because the
journal Review of General Psychology ranked her as one of the most
influential psychologists of the 20th century. She’s especially well-known
for proving that “false memories” can be planted in a person’s mind,
influencing the outcome of trials.

Loftus already has created a distinguished-speaker program for the center.
The first guest will be Thomas Mesereau, the attorney who successfully
defended singer Michael Jackson against child-molestation charges. Mesereau
will visit UCI on March 15 to give a talk that isn’t open to the public.

Loftus can be seen discussing repressed memories at 10 p.m. Friday on the
CBS program “48 Hours.”

Michael Jackson: A Perspective

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

An Excellent Read, that Exclusive MJ would encourage our readers to pass on to family and friends…

The following is an opinion piece by E. Joyce Moore and appears at
http://www.speroforum.com

Does the world care when a creep goes after underage girls is still making
money and recordings because his victims were black - similar to when
African American children go missing, the Amber alert and national calls to
look by the media rarely occur

“I personally measure success in terms of the contributions an individual
makes to his or her fellow human beings.” Margaret Mead

I promise: this is most likely my last write on this subject as there are
many more important things to speak of … like the firing of two editorial
writers from the Indianapolis Star — one black male, one white female —
for mentioning God in their respective columns. They are suing to get their
jobs back and they should. But I digress.

I have noted the commentaries, run-on verbiage from those who have shows
where they own the power over the microphone, et al. Funny that so many
“overlooked” the statement made firsthand by one of the jurors who agreed to
the group interview. She clearly stated that many of them went into the
trial with a bias or pre concluded view of Michael Jackson’s guilt, but when
they as a group decided to look solely at the evidence they found him not
guilty. So it really wasn’t about how the accuser’s mother looked or behaved
or that he was a pop star, it was about the evidence. Unlike the OJ trial
where the reasoning the media hyped was that the jury had people of color on
it and that was why he was freed, the same conclusion could not be made
about this jury. (By the way, my take on that was that OJ didn’t do it, but
may know who did. My brother has the same injuries to his knees that OJ has
and said there’s no way physically he could have personally done it. I am
totally not an OJ fan so I have no bias.)

That said, let’s just think for a moment about the big picture. Here we have
a black man who, granted, is at best eccentric and private. He never had a
real childhood publicly or privately. So when he was old enough, he decided
to create what he always wanted and become a child of sorts. He was naive
enough to believe that such behavior would not only be okay with the
universe, but actually be embraced. Add to that the fact that MJ is a very
stubborn, somewhat controlling man.

This is a rich black man surrounding himself with mostly white children. Not
an acceptable situation for most in this country, so something must be
wrong. You see, it didn’t matter to the world that the creep that goes after
underage girls is still out there making money and recordings because his
victims were black. Similar to when African American children go missing,
the Amber alert and national calls to look by the media rarely, if ever,
occur. Has it ever occurred to those who believe that he is guilty that if
that is true, then why didn’t any of the ex-employees, who claimed to have
seen something, have enough guts to walk in remove the child and go to the
police immediately? They would have been deemed heroes and had a book or
movie deal, because that’s how it works in the US. Why would parents
continue to leave their children on the property unattended if there was
even a hint that there might be any truth to the allegations? And why hasn’t
the prosecution ever gone after the parents for complicity in these alleged
matters?

Don’t get me wrong; I fault Michael for being stubborn and just stupid for
putting himself in the position of being electronically lynched by the media
and the court of public perception. I hope he has learned his lesson and
takes responsibility for his part in this, or it will continue to cost him.
If he wants to be angry, he should start with himself. Even Oprah has
learned (to some degree) that even she can’t walk into any store without
them seeing her race first and who she is second.

I wouldn’t get all caught up in the idea that because he has been accused
more than once he must be guilty. The evidence doesn’t prove that out and
Michael chose to settle cases because he treasured his privacy more than
money. He no longer has that luxury, he lost that right when he chose to
keep doing what he’d always done, believing that the truth would prevail.
Truth nowadays is only as true as people choose to see it. It is a colossal
mistake to believe otherwise

Jackson Ordered To Pay Rowe’s Legal Fees

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

Lawyers for Michael Jackson’s ex-wife, Debbie Rowe, say he is $75,000 behind in paying her legal fees for their ongoing custody battle.

Jackson and Rowe have been battling in Los Angeles family court for custody of Prince Michael, 8, and Paris, 7, who currently live with their father and his third son by another mother in Bahrain.

The court had ordered Jackson to pay Rowe’s legal team, which the New York Daily Post said is common when one parent has a lot more money than the other.

Court documents obtained by the Post say Jackson has fallen behind in his payments and Rowe’s attorneys are seeking access to his financial records, the Post said.

Neither side could be reached for comment on the report.

The next hearing the custody fight is scheduled for March 17.

MICHAEL JACKSON NOT IN DISCUSSIONS REGARDING
POPE JOHN PAUL II’S PRAYERS

Contrary to published reports in Italy, and the United States, Michael Jackson has not participated in any discussions with the Vatican, or Edizioni Musicali Terzo Millennio, an Italian music label specializing in religious songs, to record music to Pope John Paul II’s prayers.

None of Mr. Jackson’s authorized representatives have contacted either the Vatican, or Edizioni Musicali Terzo Millennio, regarding this proposed project.

Michael Jackson is unaware of this project, and news reports stating otherwise are completely erroneous.

Jackson’s Private Eye Secrets May Be Revealed

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

Notorious private eye Anthony Pellicano will be arraigned this morning on a variety of charges still unknown in Los Angeles.

Pellicano just finished a stretch in prison on Friday stemming from an incident in which he threatened the life of a reporter.

The Pellicano case could cause a lot of trouble for Tom Cruise and Michael Jackson.

Both stars at one time or another have retained Fields to represent them in unusual and delicate matters pertaining to their personal lives.

In recent weeks, the Los Angeles Times has reported, authorities have been able to link Fields and Pellicano when they arrested a former Beverly Hills police officer who admitted using police computers to help Pellicano gather information on a man being sued by a client of Fields’ firm.

In the case of Cruise, there isn’t an arm of the entertainment press that hasn’t gotten a letter from Fields sometime in the last 20 or so years demanding a retraction, correction or apology.

Fields has been a fervent defender of Cruise against all perceived accusations, allegations and possible libels or slurs. The matters almost always extended to speculation about Cruise’s sexuality or religion.

At the same time, Fields is now legendary for representing Jackson back during his original child molestation scandal in 1993-94. Well documented by now, Fields interceded with the family of Jackson’s accuser, shaping the terms of Jackson’s settlement with them.

What’s at the center of this is that Fields often employed Pellicano as an investigator. In the Jackson case, much has been chronicled about Pellicano’s role as Fields’s operative. What’s always been extraordinarily interesting, my sources have insisted for the last two years, is that the raid on Neverland on Nov. 18, 2003, coincided with Pellicano starting his prison term in a seemingly unrelated matter that week.

Two weeks before Jackson’s arrest and Pellicano’s incarceration, Fields, according to Variety, “became the first lawyer to acknowledge that he had been interviewed by the FBI in connection with a wiretapping investigation of Pellicano.”

The many dozens of boxes removed from Pellicano’s offices in 2002 included files on many of Fields’ high-profile clients as well as those of other prominent Hollywood attorneys.

It’s a potentially explosive situation that could wind up naming not just Cruise and Jackson but lots of other stars who wouldn’t want their personal business made public.

Sony Excited With Forthcoming Jackson Release

Monday, February 6th, 2006

An imminent crossmedia campaign from Sony BMG underlines Europe’s undimmed appetite for the vintage work of Michael Jackson.

Between February and June in the United Kingdom, the company will begin a series of weekly rereleases of 20 of Jackson’s best-known songs as limited-edition singles. The project is reminiscent of a highly successful Elvis Presley campaign that Sony BMG launched 12 months ago.

The Jackson series, under the banner “Visionary - The Video Singles,” will see each single released on DualDisc with its original video. Sony BMG claims Jackson is the world’s first artist to have DualDisc singles released. The Official U.K. Charts Co. confirms the singles are chart-eligible.

Sony BMG’s Presley series was based around his 18 U.K. chart-toppers. All the reissues reached the top five and three reached No. 1, generating total U.K. sales of 625,000 units, according to the OCC.

The Jackson project is due to begin Feb. 20 with two singles, “Thriller” and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” A limited, numbered box will also be sold to house all 20 releases. The series will conclude June 26 with “Blood On The Dance Floor.”

Sony BMG U.K. VP of commercial marketing Darren Henderson believes total sales could outnumber the Presley campaign, claiming Jackson’s commercial status in Europe has not been adversely affected by negative publicity surrounding his personal life and last year’s 14-week U.S. child abuse trial.

“The media have more of an issue [with that] than the British record-buying public,” he says. Further, the DualDisc aspect lets the company focus on Jackson’s innovative visual work.

Henderson notes that while Sony BMG’s international companies initially felt the Presley campaign was innappropriate for their markets, they noted the British sales and media impact with interest. Consequently, Sony BMG in France and in Germany will run with the Jackson series week by week. Other territories will release the singles in “batches.” There were not any firm plans at press time for U.S. campaign.

Retail reaction so far is positive. London-based HMV U.K. & Ireland singles buyer Stewart Allan describes Jackson “one of the few artists with the depth of singles, recording heritage and dedicated fan base to make such a project work.”

Allan points out that the label and retail can draw upon the Presley experience to make the campaign work effectively. “[This] also presents a perfect opportunity to further test and develop the DualDisc format,” he adds.

Sony BMG says the 2005 38-track Epic double CD “The Essential Michael Jackson” is platinum in the United Kingdom (300,000 shipments). In the United States, however, negative publicity appears to have done more damage to the artist’s commericial profile. In July the double CD had first week sales of only 8,000 units, according to Neilsen SoundScan, and has sold 93,000 to date.
