TOM MESEREAU. He of the long silver hair and long silver tongue — maybe he should be known as Long Tom Silver — is going the route of everyone else coming off a major trial. The guy’s shopping a publishing deal. I mean, thank God for folks facing jail. If not for them, our libraries would be empty.

Remember the O.J. freak show? Friends wrote books, friends of Nicole Simpson wrote books, jurors wrote books, the flopped prosecutors wrote books. Everyone wrote books except O.J., and that was only because he was too busy looking for whoever killed his wife. In the just-happened Scott Peterson thing, a girlfriend wrote a book, a sister wrote a book, all God’s chillun wrote books.

Comes now the Michael Jackson case, which lasted longer than Michael Jackson has lived. Mr. Mesereau is Harvard educated. That’s nice. Mr. Mesereau is an L.A. hotshot. Also nice. But civilization has suffered through his interminably long trial with its saturation coverage. And people with TVs have already seen Mr. Mesereau on every show except “The Simpsons.” So would we care to hear more from him? On what will clearly be a very pro-Michael job?

Apparently, yes. The numbers being bandied about that a) he’d want and B] he’ll get — are seven figures.

Hurdle No. 1 is to get permission from Michael & Co. since he cannot breach the attorney-client privilege. And why would they give that? Speculation is, they owe him money big-time and will for a long time.
